Education changes as time and technology advance; everything from the way we learn to the way we teach new concepts. We are not the first nor last generation to experience the feeling of being mislead about a particular concept or subject matter. Growing up, we traditionally learned how to subtract double digit numbers by learning how to borrow. Traditionally we were reminded how to be a "good neighbor and borrow."At the time, its something you don't really think about or perhaps fully understand however, you know its something of significant value and you should learn. It's not until we are much older, in a college class reading about educational misconceptions or teaching the subject matter ourselves, that we deeply question what we are teaching and or the method we learn of going about it. Although it sounds terrible, I feel this is truly how we learn. Thus the constant pendulum shift of most effective teaching strategies i.e. common core shift.
I completely agree with your post. We learn this greater concepts way to late in our education.
ReplyDeleteDenise, you make very valid points. Education and they way teachers deliver their lessons are an ever changing time in our world today, and I feel that these changes are very necessary for our students to succeed in their education. Let's see how this common core shift will take us.
